WV is anti-kid too

Filed under: bond — Editor @ 2:03 pm

Turns out this blogging for your school thing is catching on.  And when people come out for sensible fiscal management in other states (i.e. are opposed to bonds), they too are called anti-children.

Does this sound familiar?

…let the accusations begin. If you criticize the creatively named “Greatest Needs” bond proposal you shall be labeled anti-children and anti-education. If you apply a sense of analysis to the individual line items that are included you will be told that the committee met for months to produce this final product and you should have been at the meetings.

  1. Bill, how about also posting this part and be totally open about it since there are some differences here that I see:

“What happened to the $4.5M bond carry-over from 1991 that was linked to last year’s failed bond attempt? When will that finally be committed for its original purpose?

Why does the annual school budget fail to set aside sufficient money to perform long-term upgrades? Roofs, HVAC, plumbing systems, electrical systems all have known expected years of service before replacement is necessary. Why is not 4 – 6% of each year’s budget not held in reserve in a capital improvement fund rather than requiring a bond proposal to fix and upgrade what should be routine?”

You really do need to paste and copy the important part, too.

We don’t have a bond carry over for one. The school district had money set aside in the fund balance acccount and where has it be allocated to, repairs! The school district tries to keep a fund balance but they are told to use it up and not keep 4% to 6% in it. The school district can’t win, nothing they do will be right.

  3. CP, I think I posted the link so there was nothing hidden. The “carry over” could also be asked about the Ashaway water tank issue. The money has been floated year to year, but nothing has happened. The money has been in the budget since I came on in 06 – let me know when you see the ground break. Considering it makes my point that we aren’t fiscally responsible, I certainly have no reason to hide it.

As for setting aside some $ for maintenance. That was proposed last year and was rejected. It has also been proposed statewide but again, shot down. But I think its a great idea – just what a normal business would do. If you support that idea I would suggest contacting the rest of the school board and asking them for their support, or at least explain why they didn’t support it. Then contact your state rep/senator and ask them to push it. You are singing to the choir here.
