Chariho Times weighs in

h/t SBH for the editorial in today’s Chariho Times – direct link HERE.

Also of note was an article on the Open Space bond.

A letter from the HTC (sans Bev Kenney) was in the Sun and Times supporting our case on Monday.  If someone has a copy I would like to post it.  thx

  1. Good for the Times for taking a principled position. I was confused by the following paragraph:

“To play devil’s advocate, you cannot blame the School Committee for booting off a member who has consistently challenged and questioned its actions and motives. And without Felkner at the meetings, the board has few voices of opposition to deal with. While we would not exactly call it a whistle-blower case, with his Chariho School Parents blog, it sometimes seems like it.”

What does the Times mean by “you cannot blame the School Committee”? Since when do we give politicians a pass for trying to purge their ranks of members who don’t go along to get along? Perhaps if we had courageous politicians like Mr. Felkner at every level we wouldn’t find ourselves in the economic peril we face?

Not only should we “blame” the School Committee, my hope would be for the judicial branch to “blame” them and to penalize them severely for their anti-democratic actions.

  2. Keep in mind this is the equivalent of a high school level newspaper, and were not talking a top tier high school at that.

  3. Yes, I was so thrilled to see a local media source actually come out on the side of taxpayers rather than the government spending crowd, I completely forgot. While the Times got it right this time, their reporting on the issue of Mr. Felkner has been skewed in favor of the Chariho status quo.

  4. Hi!
    Two things:
    1. The Chariho Times does well with a limited staff. Those of us through the years that have taken on Chariho either internally like Bill Felkner or externally like Georgia Ure, or myself and others are like “unwelcome guests!” A newspaper properly should look at all angles. My concern is this: my feeling is very probable Bill will prevail. I am concerned about the lack of consequences for those who orchestrated and encouraged this nonsense. I suspect the Supreme Court may question the school committee to even passing judgement on whether a vacancy exists, since they are NOT the appointing authority in case of a vacancy! Also what real proper role do other town councils have to way in? It does not really impact their representation. Look forward to being in Providence Monday.
    2. Local area Masons are having an open house next month. Save the date April 11TH,. Will update further information. Check out http://www.thewesterlysun.com for their weeklies, Charlestown Press, Wood River Press, or Westerly-Pawcatuck Press.
    Regards,
    Scott

  5. You’re too kind Scott, a limited staff can still perform above an 8th grade level.
